2013 Past Activities

The USF ADVANCE PAID team hosted the "Academic Women Leadership Discussion Panel" on Wednesday, October 10th, 2012, 10:30a.m. to 1:00 pm., Marshall Student Center Room 2708. Panelists included Garnett Stokes (Provost, FSU), Karen Holbrook (Sr. Vice President, USF), Jackie Dixon (Dean, Marine Science, USF) and Karen Liller (Dean, Graduate School, USF). Panelists spoke about the challenges they encountered while successfully pursuing their leadership positions and offered advice to colleagues on best strategies to advance their careers. After the 60 minute panel discussion, there was a 30 minute Q&A followed by a networking lunch.

2012 Past Activities

In October 2012, the AAFAWCE newsletter, ADVANCing News was distributed on all five campuses in the appropriate university color.

AAFAWCE team members attended NSF JAM 2012 in Washington D.C., June 12th to 15th. AAFAWCE team members led the session, "Isolation and Women Faculty." AAFAWCE presented a poster on its mentoring activities.

COACh Workshop

AAFAWCE-FAMU hosted the second COACh professional development workshop for women faculty, "Uses of Influence, Power and Conflict Resolution in Negotiation," on February 23-24, 2012 in Tallahassee, Florida. The workshop began with a 2-hour opening session at the Hotel Duval located in downtown Tallahassee on Thursday night, and resumed Friday morning for an all-day session at the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee.

Facilitators Jane Tucker and Barbara Butterfield from COACh reviewed essential negotiation skills and examine Cialdini's six principles of influence. Additionally, the group took stock of personal and network power, and applied this knowledge to identify positive coalitions that can drive organizational change. Finally, factors contributing to personal success and failure were examined and applied to case studies. Travel funds were available for faculty to attend from all five universities through the NSF grant.

Workshop: Using Mentoring and Networking to Develop Your Leadership Skills

AAFAWCE-USF hosted the workshop, "Using Mentoring and Networking to Develop Your Leadership Skills" on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012, 1:30pm – 3:30pm at the Patel Center, Room 140. Facilitated by Donna Dean, Ph.D., this workshop focused on practical strategies that individuals can implement in finding the right mentors and networking approaches for their career trajectory. Dr. Dean presented pragmatic points and action steps that could help attendees clarify their specific career development needs. How to identify the most appropriate mentors was also a key part of the presentation, as were critical facets of effective leadership strategies.

Dr. Dean, former President of the American Women in Science (AWIS), is a pivotal leader on scientific and technical workforce issues, women's health, and career strategies for young scientists. She has given over 450 presentations to universities, medical schools, and professional organizations. She is currently on the Board of Advisors for the Tulane University School of Science and Engineering and for the AAAS Center for Advancing Science and Engineering Capacity. She recently authored the book, Getting the Most out of Your Mentoring Relationships: A Handbook for Women in STEM.

2010 Activities

COACh Workshop: COAChing Strong Women in the Power of Strategic Persuasion
October 22nd, 2010

Tallahassee, Florida

Florida State University (FSU) hosted this workshop as well as a discussion panel. In the COACh workshop, participants assimilated fundamentals of responsible negotiations and conflict resolution; they learned to be curious about points of view, data, and aspirations of all parties involved. Attendees examined the importance of developing alternatives to agreement that build self-confidence and enhance preparation. They used self-examination to discover personal negotiating styles and in prepared case studies covering current challenges, practiced skills to reach highly successful outcomes. Train-the-Trainer Faculty Recruitment Practices Workshop
April 9th, 2010

AAFAWCE ADVANCE-PAID Florida State University (FSU) hosted this workshop facilitated by Drs. Pamela Raymond (Professor and Chair of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology) and Kathy Spindler (Professor of Microbiology and Immunology), University of Michigan. This workshop was designed to instruct two to four representatives from each university on information and advice about practices that maximize the likelihood that diverse, well-qualified candidates for faculty positions will be identified, and, if selected for offers, recruited, retained, and promoted at universities.
